The Beaucousin Collection at the National Gallery - "Charity", by F. Salviati, 1860. Engraving of a painting. The most recent accession to our National Gallery, at least of those which have been exposed to public scrutiny, is the collection of thirty-one pictures purchased last year from M. Edmond Beaucousin, at Paris, for some £5000 or £6000, we do not recollect the exact amount. The "Charity" by Salviati, a Florentine by birth (b. 1510, d. 1563), contrasts remarkably by the boldness displayed in its motive and grouping with the more modest work of Francia, and betrays that studied imitation of Michael Angelo in which the Roman school at this period unrestrainedly indulged. This is the only specimen of the master in the National Collection'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Beaucousin Collection at the National Gallery: A New Addition of Italian Masterpieces The National Gallery in London continues to expand its horizons with the acquisition of a new collection of thirty-one Italian paintings, purchased last year from M. Edmond Beaucousin in Paris. The collection, which cost between £5000 and £6000, has recently been unveiled to the public, adding significant depth to the Gallery's Italian holdings. One of the most intriguing pieces in this latest acquisition is "Charity" by Francesco Salviati, an early 16th-century Florentine artist born in 1510 and deceased in 1563. This engraving of the painting, created by an unknown artist, offers a glimpse into the masterpiece that now graces the halls of the National Gallery. Salviati's "Charity" stands out in the collection for its boldness in motive and grouping, contrasting sharply with the more modest works of other artists. The painting showcases the artist's studied imitation of Michelangelo, a popular trend in the Roman school during this period. This is the only known Salviati work in the National Collection, making it a valuable addition to the Gallery's Italian masterpieces. The acquisition of the Beaucousin Collection represents the National Gallery's ongoing commitment to expanding its collection and sharing the rich artistic heritage of Italy with the world. The enigmatic "Charity" by Salviati offers a testament to the bold artistic vision and masterful technique that defined the Italian Renaissance, making it a must-see addition to any visit to the National Gallery.
