The British Association at Bath: the village and quarries at Holwell, near Bath, 1864. Two hundred persons, on Saturday, accompanied Mr. C. Moore on the Excursion to the Mendip Rocks, near Frome, where occur the singular combinations of old, up-turned carboniferous limestones, receiving on their water-worn surfaces deposits of rhoetian, liassic, and oolitic beds, and exhibiting in their fissures some vertical bands, which seemed like dykes, and others which really were metalliferous veins. The main purpose of the trip was geological; the additions were archaeological...The quarries of Holwell possess considerable interest for the geologist, in common with other hillsides along the Mendip Range, a district from which Mr. Moore has extracted some of the rare and numerous specimens with which he has enriched the museum of the Bath Institution'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures The British Association at Bath on an excursion to the village and quarries at Holwell in 1864. Two hundred individuals joined Mr. C. Moore on this geological expedition to the Mendip Rocks near Frome, where they explored the unique combinations of carboniferous limestones, rhoetian, liassic, and oolitic beds.
The image showcases the rugged beauty of the landscape with its water-worn surfaces and vertical bands resembling dykes and metalliferous veins. The quarries of Holwell are highlighted for their geological significance, offering a glimpse into the rich history of this region along the Mendip Range.
As described in "Illustrated London News" in 1864, this print not only serves as a visual record of a scientific exploration but also sheds light on the archaeological treasures found within these hillsides. Mr. Moore's contributions to enriching the museum of Bath Institution with rare specimens from this area further emphasize the importance of preserving our natural heritage.
Through this historical artwork, we are transported back in time to witness firsthand the passion for discovery and knowledge that drove early geologists like Mr. Moore and his companions during their expeditions in search of hidden gems within our Earth's crust.
