EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 8th to 9th century Buddha figure hails from the Indonesian island of Java and is a prime example of the rich artistic heritage of South East Asia during this period. The Buddha, depicted in a seated position with his legs crossed in the lotus position and his hands in the meditation mudra, is made of copper alloy and is covered in a green patina. The intricate details of the figure's robes, with their delicate folds and textured surface, are a testament to the skill and artistry of the unknown artist. The Buddha's serene expression and peaceful demeanor convey a sense of deep contemplation and spiritual enlightenment, making this sculpture a powerful symbol of the Buddhist faith. The figure's elongated earlobes and ushnisha, a small protuberance at the top of the head, are characteristic features of Buddhist iconography. This Buddha figure was likely produced during the Sailendra or Mataram dynasty, which ruled over much of Java during this time. The influence of Indian art and Buddhism on Java during this period is evident in the figure's posture and iconography. The figure is now part of the South and Southeast Asian Art collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it is a cherished addition to the museum's extensive holdings of Asian art. The figure's provenance is unknown, but it is believed to have been acquired by LACMA in the early 20th century. This Buddha figure is a reminder of the rich cultural exchange that took place between India and Southeast Asia during this period, and the enduring influence of Buddhism on the art and spiritual traditions of the region.
