EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 13th-14th century brass sculpture depicts the Buddhist deity Hayagriva and his consort, a form of the compassionate bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara or Guan Yin, known as Padmapani and Kuan Yin in other traditions. The statue is intricately inlaid with silver, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship of the unknown artist. Hayagriva, also known as Heruka or Hayagriva Vajrapani, is a wrathful manifestation of Avalokiteshvara. He is depicted here with four arms, each holding an object symbolizing the four immeasurables: a lotus in his left upper hand representing generosity, a conch shell in his left lower hand symbolizing the sound of the Dharma, a right upper hand in the gesture of fearlessness, and a right lower hand holding a sword, symbolizing the destruction of ignorance and suffering. His consort, depicted in a graceful and elegant pose, is often identified as Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, or Tara, the goddess of protection and liberation. She is shown holding a lotus in her left hand and a bowl in her right, symbolizing the offering of spiritual nourishment. This sculpture is believed to have originated from Tibet or the Himalayan region, and is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Tibetan Buddhism. It is currently on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), providing a valuable opportunity for visitors to appreciate the intricate details and symbolism of this ancient work of art.
