EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 8th century artifact, created by the renowned artist Kumaradeva, showcases the Buddhist goddesses Shyama Tara (Green Tara) and Sita Tara (White Tara) in a captivating and harmonious composition. Green Tara, the embodiment of compassion and protection, is depicted in a graceful posture, with one leg folded under her and the other extending out, ready to grant blessings to her devotees. She is adorned with various ornaments and holds a lotus in her left hand, symbolizing the attainment of enlightenment. Accompanying Green Tara is her sister and counterpart, White Tara, who embodies wisdom and longevity. White Tara is depicted in a similar pose, but with her right leg extended, and her hands in the mudra of granting boons. She is dressed in pristine white robes and adorned with jewels, symbolizing her purity and divine nature. The goddesses are attended by Bhrikuti, a legendary figure from Nepalese mythology who is believed to have brought Buddhism to Nepal. Bhrikuti is depicted as a beautiful and elegant woman, holding a parasol over the heads of the goddesses to protect them from the sun. This copper alloy statuette, inlaid with silver, is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of South Asia during the 8th century. It is currently housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), providing a valuable insight into the religious and cultural practices of ancient civilizations. The intricate details of the goddesses' features, their elegant postures, and the delicate inlay work on their clothing and ornaments, demonstrate the exceptional skill and artistry of Kumaradeva and the artistic traditions of the time.
