EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking engraving, created by Robert Nanteuil in the 1650s, depicts Cardinal Jules Mazarin (1602-1661), a prominent French diplomat and statesman of the Baroque era. Mazarin, born Giulio Raimondo Mazzarino in Pesaro, Italy, rose to prominence in the court of Louis XIII of France and later served as the chief advisor to the young Louis XIV. The cardinal is shown here in full regalia, wearing the red robes and hat of his ecclesiastical rank, adorned with the distinctive white galero hat and the red tassels known as "pom-poms." In his right hand, he holds a pastoral staff, symbolizing his spiritual authority, while in his left, he displays the shield of arms of his family, the Mazzarini. The shield bears the blazon "Gules, three mullets argent," a heraldic design that can still be seen today on the coat of arms of the city of Pesaro. Mazarin's impressive political career saw him serve as the Commissary General of Finances, a position that gave him control over the French treasury, and as the Cardinal-Protector of the Order of the Holy Ghost. His diplomatic skills were instrumental in securing peace between France and Spain during the Fronde rebellion, and he played a key role in the negotiations that led to the Peace of the Pyrenees in 1659. This beautiful and historic print of Cardinal Mazarin is now part of the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it continues to captivate visitors with its intricate detail and rich historical significance. The image serves as a reminder of the important role that Mazarin played in the political and religious landscape of Europe during the seventeenth century, and of the enduring legacy of the Baroque era in art and culture.
