Chistian Davies (or Old Mother Ross ), c1706 (1904)
Chistian Davies (or Old Mother Ross ), c1706 (1904). Born Christian Cavanagh in Dublin, Christian Kit Davies (1667-1739) served in disguise in the British Army from 1693 to 1697 and again from 1701 until 1706, in an attempt to find her husband, who was also serving in the army, possibly after being pressed into service. She finally located him in 1704 after the Battle of Blenheim, but after discovering him with another woman, decided to remain in the army. In 1706 Davies was wounded at the Battle of Ramillies, suffering a fractured skull, and her identity as a woman was discovered by the surgeon treating her wounds. After this she was discharged from her regiment, the Scots Greys, but the regimental commander agreed that she should continue to be paid while in the care of the army, and as part of her discharge, the regiments officers paid for a new wardrobe for her. A print from The Girls Own Annual, 1 October 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Christian Davies, also known as Old Mother Ross, in the year 1706. Born as Christian Cavanagh in Dublin, she embarked on a remarkable journey that defied societal norms and expectations of her time. In an attempt to find her husband who was serving in the British Army, Christian disguised herself and served alongside him from 1693 to 1697 and again from 1701 to 1706. After locating her husband following the Battle of Blenheim in 1704, Christian's world shattered when she discovered him with another woman. Determined not to let this setback define her life, she made the courageous decision to remain in the army. However, fate had other plans for her when she sustained a severe head injury at the Battle of Ramillies in 1706. It was during treatment for these wounds that her true identity as a woman was uncovered. Although discharged from her regiment, The Scots Greys, Christian received continued support from its officers who ensured she would be cared for by the army and even provided funds for a new wardrobe. This extraordinary tale exemplifies love, devotion, and resilience amidst war-torn times. Christian Davies' story serves as a testament to women's strength and determination throughout history. This print captures not only an iconic figure but also represents an era marked by deception on horseback where individuals like Davies challenged societal boundaries while fighting for their beliefs on both personal and national levels.
