EDITORS COMMENTS
Costumes de Différents Pays, 'Ministre et Negre du Royaume de Benin' by Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur is an intriguing and historically significant engraving from the late 18th century. This full-length image, hand-tinted on paper, depicts two figures from the Kingdom of Benin in West Africa. The first figure, dressed in the attire of a high-ranking minister, wears a flowing robe adorned with intricate patterns and a large necklace. His bare chest and feet signify his noble status, as only the elite could afford to go barefoot and bare-chested in public. The second figure, dressed as a black servant or 'Negre,' is shown wearing a simple loincloth and anklets. He holds a club in his hand, a common accessory for African men at the time. The stark contrast between the two figures highlights the social hierarchy and cultural differences of the time. Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur, a French artist, created this work as part of his series 'Costumes de Differents Pays' or 'Costumes of Different Countries.' This series was published in Paris in the late 1790s and was one of the most comprehensive visual records of the world's diverse populations during this period. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is home to this rare and valuable hand-tinted engraving, which is an essential addition to any collection of anthropology, ethnography, or historical art. The image not only provides a glimpse into the fashion and customs of the Kingdom of Benin during the 18th century but also serves as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Africa.
