EDITORS COMMENTS
Dhanasri Ragini, an exquisite 18th-century masterpiece that captures the essence of Indian art and culture. Created by an unknown artist, this painting showcases the beauty and intricacy of Rajasthani miniature art. The black ink outlines on buff paper are delicately enhanced with touches of watercolor, bringing to life a vibrant scene set in the palace courtyard of Bundi. Two women are depicted sitting on a terrace, immersed in relaxation and contemplation. Their graceful postures exude tranquility while their colorful attire reflects the rich heritage of Hindoostan. As we gaze upon this close-up view, we are transported back in time to witness a moment frozen forever within these strokes. The attention to detail is remarkable; every line and brushstroke tells a story of its own. This artwork is part of the Ragamala series, which depicts various musical modes or ragas through visual representation. Displayed at the Art Institute Chicago's Arts of Asia gallery, this print serves as a testament to India's artistic legacy. It symbolizes not only the skillful craftsmanship but also celebrates women's contributions to society throughout history. Let us marvel at this enigmatic creation from centuries past – an ode to both forgotten artists and timeless traditions.

The Chene chapelle, or chapel oak, an oak tree located in Allouville-Bellefosse in Seine-Maritime, France, seen here in the 19th century. The tree was struck by lightning when it was nearly 500 years old and the resulting fire burned slowly through the center and hollowed the tree out. The local Abbot and village priest, declared this a holy event and built a place of pilgrimage devoted to the Virgin Mary in the hollow. The chapel above and the staircase above were added afterwards. From The Universe or, The Infinitely Great and the Infinitely Little, published 1882
