Farewell Dinner given to the Prince of Wales by the officers of the Serapis...1876. Creator: L.B

Farewell Dinner given to the Prince of Wales by the officers of the Serapis: Captain Glyn presenting the Album, from a sketch by our special artist, 1876. The table was laid for forty, on the main deck (called the Windsor Long Walk'), which was decorated with flags, trophies of arms, and other ornaments. After The Queen had been honoured [toasted], as usual, Captain Glyn, in an excellent speech, proposed the Prince's health, and begged him to accept an album as a keepsake. This album was made by Westfield and Co. of Calcutta. It contained, besides a large photograph of every officer, photographed groups of the men and the guard of honour, views of different parts of the ship, and photographs of a few favourite animals'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
Farewell Dinner given to His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales by the Officers of HMS Serapis: A Memorable Moment Captured in Time (L.B, Farewell Dinner given to the Prince of Wales by the officers of the Serapis: Captain Glyn presenting the Album, from a sketch by our special artist, 1876) This evocative image captures the essence of a grand farewell dinner given to His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales on board HMS Serapis in 1876. The table, laid out on the main deck, also known as the 'Windsor Long Walk', was elegantly decorated with flags, trophies of arms, and other ornaments. The occasion began with the customary toast to The Queen, followed by an eloquent speech from Captain Glyn, who proposed a heartfelt tribute to the Prince. As a keepsake, Captain Glyn presented the Prince with an exquisite album, meticulously crafted by Westfield and Co. of Calcutta. The album was a treasure trove of memories, containing a large photograph of every officer, group photographs of the men and the guard of honour, views of different parts of the ship, and a few favourite animal portraits. The scene is set indoors, with the men dressed in their formal dinner jackets and dress uniforms, surrounded by candelabras and candles, creating an intimate and warm atmosphere. The Prince, wearing a dinner jacket and dress, sits among the banqueters, engrossed in the moment, as the officers raise their glasses in a toast to their esteemed leader. This photograph is a testament to the rich naval history of the 19th century, showcasing the fashion of the time, the concept of naval warfare, and the camaraderie among the officers of HMS Serapis. The image, from the pages of the Illustrated London News, is a poignant reminder of a bygone era, frozen in time, and a fitting tribute to the Prince's visit to the naval ship.
