Fort and Town of Alessandria, Sardinia, 1857. The plan which is now to be carried out consists of a bastioned body and four detached forts, one situated on the Bormida, a second on the Tanaro, and the other two to the east and south-east of the place. This fortress, with the aid of Casale on one side and Genoa on the other, will enable a body of from 20, 000 to 25, 000 men to keep a much larger army in check for many months, until the arrival of succour from other quarters'.
