EDITORS COMMENTS
This wood engraving depicts the Fort and Town of Alessandria in Piedmont, Italy, as it appeared in 1857. The image, published in the Illustrated London News, showcases the strategic military location of the fortress and the surrounding town. At the time, Alessandria was part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. The caption explains that the fortification plan included a bastioned body and four detached forts, situated on the Bormida, Tanaro, and to the east and south-east of the town. The fortress, with the support of Casale and Genoa, was expected to hold off a much larger enemy army for extended periods, until reinforcements arrived. The town of Alessandria is nestled between the rivers Bormida and Tanaro, with several bridges connecting the two bodies of water.
