Grand Musical Festival, at Gotha, 1845. Creator: Unknown
Grand Musical Festival, at Gotha, 1845. Concert in honour of Queen Victorias visit to Germany, featuring The musical forces of no less than twenty-one towns and villages surrounding Gotha...The concert took place in the air, before the Palace of Friedenstein - two pavilions, facing one another, were erected..The smaller one was destined for the Royal party, the other for the singers.
At about four o clock the concert commenced. It opened with a sort of congratulatory ode to the Queen of England, sufficiently commonplace in its diction, but spirited enough in the music. The composer is Jacobs, of Berlin. It was sung with very great delicacy of expression but, although there were no less than nine hundred voices engaged, the effect was comparatively lost in the open air. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Grand Musical Festival that took place in Gotha, Germany in 1845. The festival was held to honor Queen Victoria's visit to Germany and featured musical forces from twenty-one towns and villages surrounding Gotha. The concert itself took place in the air, with two pavilions facing each other - one for the Royal party and the other for the singers. The concert began at around four o'clock with a congratulatory ode to Queen Victoria composed by Jacobs of Berlin. Although sung with great delicacy of expression by nine hundred voices, the open-air setting somewhat diminished its impact. This engraving, originally published in "Illustrated London News" in 1845, provides a glimpse into this grand event during the nineteenth century. In this image, we see men and women dressed elegantly attending the concert before Friedenstein Palace in Gotha. The architectural beauty of the palace serves as an impressive backdrop for this musical extravaganza. Queen Victoria herself is not visible but her presence is felt through this celebration dedicated to her. This historic photograph offers a fascinating insight into both cultural events of that time period and royal visits abroad. It showcases not only the grandeur of such occasions but also highlights how music played an integral role in honoring monarchs like Queen Victoria during her reign over Great Britain and Ireland.
