H. M. King of Spain, c1910. Portrait of Alfonso XIII (1886-1941), King of Spain, wearing a fur-lined cape and holding a plumed helmet. The posthumous son of Alfonso XII, Alfonso XIII was proclaimed king at his birth, although his mother, Queen Maria Christina, ruled as regent until he reached the age of 16. Alfonso himself ruled from 1902 until 1931 when, refusing to abdicate when elections returned an overwhelming vote for a republic, he left the country, dying in exile in Rome in 1941. Postcard. [J. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the regal presence of H. M. King Alfonso XIII, the sovereign ruler of Spain during the early 20th century. Taken around 1910, this portrait showcases a young man adorned in a fur-lined cape and holding a plumed helmet, exuding an air of authority and elegance. The unknown creators have skillfully captured the essence of royalty through their lens. Alfonso XIII was born into power as the posthumous son of Alfonso XII, with his mother Queen Maria Christina serving as regent until he came of age at 16. Assuming full control in 1902, he reigned for almost three decades until political unrest forced him into exile in Rome in 1931. The image highlights not only his majestic appearance but also signifies his military role with gold braid adorning his uniform and medals proudly displayed on his chest. His well-groomed moustache adds to the charm and sophistication that defined this era's monarchs. This postcard print by J. Beagles & Co. , Ltd preserves an important moment in Spanish history when monarchy transitioned to republicanism. It serves as a reminder of Alfonso XIII's reign and subsequent departure from Spain after refusing to abdicate despite overwhelming support for a republic. As we gaze upon this photograph today, we are transported back to a time when kings ruled nations with dignity and grace, leaving an indelible mark on history even long after they have left us.
