EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the Head-Quarters of Lord Raglan, situated near Balaclava during the Crimean War in 1854. The scene is set against the backdrop of a long, villa-style building, partly covered in vines, which is both a house and farmhouse. The luxuriant Crimean vines add a striking contrast to the military encampment, with tents pitched in the adjacent grounds. The British flag proudly flies on the right side of the picture, signifying the presence of the British forces. Lord Raglan, whose full title was Field Marshal FitzRoy James Henry Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan, served as the Master-General of the Ordnance and commanded the British troops in the Crimea. The disputed territory of Crimea, located on the Crimean Peninsula in Ukraine, was a focal point of the Crimean War. This sketch by Lieutenant Montagu O'Reilly, published in the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the daily life of the British army during this pivotal historical period. The image showcases a range of concepts, including the army, armed forces, and the British flag. The presence of horses, horsemen, and tents underscores the military nature of the camp. The buildings, with their farmhouse-like exteriors, hint at the daily life of the soldiers and their support staff. Overall, this image provides a window into the past, offering a glimpse into the history of the Crimean War and the role of Lord Raglan and the British forces during this time.
