Lord Raglan, also known as Fitzroy HJ Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan, was a distinguished British soldier in the 19th century. Born in Cricklade Street, Swindon around 1900, he would go on to leave an indelible mark on history. One of his notable achievements was leading the British Army during the Crimean War. In 1856, Lord Raglan's love for horses and landscapes was captured beautifully in "Shadrach, " an oil painting depicting a chestnut hunter against a picturesque backdrop. This artwork showcased his appreciation for both art and nature. Lord Raglan's military prowess extended beyond the battlefield; he also played a significant role in politics. An engraving titled "The War Office Question in the House of Lords" depicts him engaging with fellow members of parliament on matters concerning national defense. His strategic thinking and leadership were highly regarded by his peers. Renowned photographer Roger Fenton immortalized Lord Raglan through his lens in 1855. The portrait titled "Field Marshall Lord Raglan" captures him exuding authority and dignity befitting his rank. A council of war held prior to battle is depicted in another image featuring Lord Raglan alongside Omar Pacha and Pelissier – key figures who strategized together before crucial engagements took place during the Crimean War. To commemorate this remarkable man's life and contributions, an engraved memorial column stands tall as a tribute to Lord Raglan's legacy. Even after death, Lord Raglan continued to command respect as seen through engravings showcasing events such as the embarkation of his body at Victoria Pier or solemn scenes like "Lord Raglans Remains. " These images serve as reminders of his impact on history even after passing away. From commanding headquarters near Balaclava to witnessing firsthand sketches from the seat of war, Lord Raglan left an indelible mark not only on the British Army but also on the annals of military history.
