EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, created by the renowned artist Utagawa Kunisada between 1848 and 1852, showcases an iconic scene from Japanese Kabuki theater. The central figures are Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Ishikawa Goemon, a legendary hero and thief, and Onoe Kikugoro II as his wife Oritsu, dressed in exquisite, colorful kimonos. Accompanying them are Arashi Rikan III as Haginoya Yaegiri and Nakamura Utaemon IV as Takagi Oriemon, making this a quartet known as "Comparison of Flowers" (Hana kurabe). Ishikawa Goemon, portrayed by Kodanji IV, is depicted with a determined and heroic expression, his hair styled in a traditional samurai topknot. His wife, Oritsu, played by Kikugoro II, dons a stunning, ornate kimono, her face expressing a gentle and loving gaze. Arashi Rikan III, as Haginoya Yaegiri, wears a bold, patterned kimono, while Nakamura Utaemon IV portrays Takagi Oriemon in a more subdued, elegant attire. The print's vibrant colors and intricate details highlight the rich heritage of Japanese art and the theatrical traditions of the Edo period. The concept of comparing the beauty of flowers through the portrayal of these four characters adds an additional layer of depth to this work.
