Il Paradiso,
EDITORS COMMENTS
or "The Paradise," located at 1188 Hillcrest Avenue in Oak Knoll, Pasadena, California, was the residence of philanthropist Elisabeth Severance Prentiss from 1917 until her death in 1948. Designed by the renowned Greene & Greene architectural firm, the house and its surrounding landscape were completed between 1911 and 1913. The Italianate-style home, with its hand-tinted, colorful exterior, showcases the unique craftsmanship and attention to detail for which Greene & Greene were known. The architectural duo, Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene, not only designed the house but also the landscape, which includes an ornamental pond and lush gardens. The garden design is a harmonious extension of the house, reflecting the Greene brothers' belief in the importance of integrating architecture and nature. Frances Benjamin Johnston, an accomplished photographer and architectural documentarian, captured this image of "Il Paradiso" in 1917. Her hand-coloured lantern slide, now part of the Library of Congress's collection, offers a glimpse into the beauty and elegance of this historic Pasadena estate. The image showcases the house's intricate details, such as the arched windows, red-tiled roof, and the picturesque garden setting. Elisabeth Severance Prentiss, an influential figure in Pasadena's social and cultural scene, was a significant patron of the arts and education. Her home, "Il Paradiso," served as a gathering place for many prominent figures of the time, further cementing its place in Pasadena's history. This photograph, taken by Frances Benjamin Johnston, offers a captivating look into the past, showcasing the timeless beauty and elegance of this historic estate.
