The Inhabitants leaving Balaclava, by Order of Lord Raglan, 1854. Creator: Unknown

The Inhabitants leaving Balaclava, by Order of Lord Raglan, 1854. Crimean War: expulsion of Greek civilians by the British Army. By means of an interpreter [Lord Raglan] told them that the whole of the male adult population must leave the place within three hours; women and children only might remain behind. Any man found in the town after that period would be shot...an old priest...came forward to complain to me...It was the fourth time he had been driven from his house. Once he had seen his home pillaged and ruined, in Candia; a second time in the Peloponnesian war; a third, in Stamboul [Istanbul]; and now, a fourth time, he was expelled from his house by the English soldiers. His wife and children had run away previously, he knew not where; and he...could not obtain leave to remain behind...A party of Highlanders were sent...to enforce Lord Raglan's order...'. The Inhabitants Leaving Balaclava, by Order of Lord Raglan, 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a poignant and evocative image capturing the forced displacement of civilians during the Crimean War. The photograph, created by an unknown artist, depicts a group of Greek men, women, and children, carrying their belongings as they leave the town of Balaclava under the orders of British Commander-in-Chief Lord Raglan. The scene unfolds against the backdrop of military tents and soldiers, with the Black Sea visible in the distance. According to an account published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1854, Lord Raglan had ordered the evacuation of the entire male adult population of Balaclava, giving them just three hours to leave. Women and children were allowed to remain, but any man found in the town after the deadline would be shot. The photograph captures the desperation and despair of the civilians, many of whom had already been displaced multiple times in their lives. An old priest, seen in the foreground of the image, had witnessed the destruction of his home four times before - once in Candia, another in the Peloponnesian War, and a third time in Istanbul. Despite his pleas to be allowed to stay, he was forced to leave once again, with no idea where his wife and children had gone. A party of Highlanders, armed and in uniform, are shown in the background, enforcing Lord Raglan's order. The image is a stark reminder of the human cost of war and the devastating impact it can have on civilians, who are often caught in the crossfire between opposing armies. The photograph is a powerful testament to the resilience and determination of those who have been displaced, and the enduring human spirit that enables them to carry on in the face of adversity.
