Irish Amelioration Society - Model Station at Derrymullen on the Bog of Allen, 1850. Manufacture of Peat Charcoal...Aided by an influential court of Directors, Mr. Rogers obtained a Royal charter for the conversion of peat fuel into charcoal for sanitary and other purposes, as also for the reclamation of the peat bogs...He at once commenced operations at Derrymullen [in Kildare, Ireland] where no sooner was a station erected, than it was besieged by the then miserable and half-starved spectres who inhabited this dreary waste - thereby proving, that where employment is to be had, the peasantry of this country are able and willing to work...no better spot could have been chosen...from its lying on the brink of the Grand Canal, with a great facility of conveying the material...to a ready market. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled 'Irish Amelioration Society - Model Station at Derrymullen on the Bog of Allen, 1850' by W Thomas, offers a glimpse into the past of agricultural innovation in Ireland during the 19th century. The photograph depicts a bustling scene at Derrymullen in Kildare, where the Irish Amelioration Society, under the leadership of Jasper W. Rogers, established a model station for the conversion of peat fuel into charcoal. Rogers, aided by an influential court of Directors, had obtained a Royal charter for the sanitary and other purposes of peat reclamation and charcoal manufacturing. The arrival of the station brought employment opportunities to the area, which was once a desolate and impoverished landscape. The photograph shows a crowd of agricultural workers eagerly at work, demonstrating their ability and willingness to labor. The location of the station was ideal, as it lay on the brink of the Grand Canal, enabling easy transportation of the material to a ready market. The image captures the essence of the rural countryside, with its farmhands working alongside boats and barges, and the vast expanse of the peat bog stretching out in the background. The photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, documents an important moment in Irish history, showcasing the potential for agricultural innovation and employment generation in the region.
