EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking half-length portrait captures Sir Julian Pauncefote, 1st Baronet (1828-1902), between the years 1890 and 1902. Pauncefote was a prominent British figure during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, serving variously as a barrister, judge, and diplomat. At the time this photograph was taken, he held the esteemed position of Permanent Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. During his tenure in the diplomatic corps, Pauncefote served as the Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the United States, and later became the British Ambassador to the United States. He played a significant role in Anglo-American relations during this period, including negotiating the Hay-Pauncefote Treaty of 1897, which established a permanent diplomatic presence for the United States in London. In this image, Pauncefote is depicted seated, facing left, and wearing the formal uniform of a British diplomat. The gold braid on his shoulders and the sash across his chest denote his high rank. The portrait was captured by the renowned American photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864-1952), who was known for her documentation of historic sites and buildings in the United States. This photograph is a testament to the fashion and style of the early 20th century, and offers a glimpse into the world of diplomacy during a pivotal moment in Anglo-American history.
