Latvians. (Festive attire of Lemzal peasants), 1862. Sheet 14 from the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie", volume 1. Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). The work is dedicated to Tsar Alexander II. Volume 1 consists of 62 colored illustrations depicting ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional dress. This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities in the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that shows which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. Volume 2 is all text, and consists of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth, -which reflect the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. The book is the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by Karl Fiale in 1862, showcases a group of Latvian peasants adorned in their traditional Lemzal festive attire. The image is part of the ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia, a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg to commemorate the millennium of the Russian Empire. The work, titled "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie," was dedicated to Tsar Alexander II and compiled by Gustav-Fedor Pauli, a German ethnographer who had immigrated to Russia. The first volume of this comprehensive ethnographic study consists of 62 color illustrations, including this one, depicting various ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional clothing. The volume also includes a fold-out table detailing the size of the populations of these groups in the empire's cities and a colored-coded ethnographic map showing their geographical distribution. The Latvian peasants in this photograph are wearing the traditional Lemzal costume, which includes a long, pleated skirt for women and knee-length trousers for men, both made of linen. Women also wear embroidered aprons and shawls, while men wear vests and waistcoats. The intricate embroidery on their clothing reflects the rich cultural heritage of the Latvian people. This photograph is a valuable historical record of the traditional dress and customs of the Latvian people during the mid-19th century. It provides a glimpse into the diverse and vibrant ethnic landscape of the Russian Empire during a time of significant cultural and historical change.
