Lime Kilns. A View at Clifton near Bristol, Gloucestershire, 1798. Artist: John Hassell

Lime Kilns. A View at Clifton near Bristol, Gloucestershire, 1798. The kilns were filled from the top with limestone and a fuel such as culm (coal or anthracite dust). After burning, the resulting lime was drawn off at the bottom of the kilns under the lean-to. Horses are shown pulling a cart up the ramp that leads to the top of the kilns. A lime burners cottage is next to the kilns as the process of burning each charge was a long one and needed supervision. In the 18th century lime became important to agriculture for applying to land as a soil improver, to the growing chemical industry, and to building in a time of rapid urban expansion

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by John Hassell showcases the Lime Kilns at Clifton near Bristol, Gloucestershire in 1798. The kilns, filled with limestone and fuel like coal or anthracite dust, were essential for producing lime. In this image, horses can be seen diligently pulling a cart up the ramp that leads to the top of the kilns. Adjacent to the kilns stands a lime burner's cottage, where supervision was necessary during the lengthy burning process. During the 18th century, lime played a crucial role in various industries. It was used as a soil improver in agriculture, supplied materials for construction projects amidst rapid urban expansion, and served as an important component in chemical manufacturing. This scenic landscape also features the River Avon flowing nearby and imposing cliffs adding character to the surroundings. Hassell's artwork beautifully captures not only historical transportation methods with horse-drawn vehicles but also highlights significant geographical features such as cliffs and riverside views. The aquatint technique employed adds depth and color to this remarkable depiction of Clifton's Lime Kilns. With its rich historical context encompassing industry, transport, building materials, and geography specific to England's eighteenth-century era, this print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a valuable glimpse into our past.
