Madonna and Child with Saints, c1510-1515. Creator: Francesco Zaganelli
Madonna and Child with Saints, c1510-1515. This grouping of the Virgin and Child with saints (Mary Magdalen, Jerome, an unidentified male saint, and Sebastian) is known as a "sacra conversazione" (sacred conversation), since the figures appear in a unified space that would allow them to speak to each other. This format is usually associated with altarpieces though in northern Italy it often appeared as here, with the figures at half-length and close to the viewer. A brocade drapery hangs behind Mary and Jesus to mark their status as King and Queen of Heaven. The lamb held by the Christ Child is a reference to his nickname, the "Lamb of God, " and is a symbol of his future sacrifice

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 16th century painting, titled "Madonna and Child with Saints," is a prime example of the sacred conversation format, a popular composition in northern Italy during this period. Created by the talented Francesco Zaganelli around 1510-1515, the work showcases the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child in the company of saints Mary Magdalen, Jerome, and an unidentified male saint, as well as the figure of Saint Sebastian. The sacred conversation format allows these figures to appear in a unified space, as if engaged in a conversation, creating a sense of intimacy and spiritual connection. Mary and Jesus are depicted at the center of the composition, with Mary's regal blue robe and veil contrasting with the warm, earthy tones of the saints' robes. The Christ Child, with his cherubic features and curly locks, holds a lamb, symbolizing his nickname as the "Lamb of God" and foreshadowing his future sacrifice. The saints, including the penitent Magdalen, the scholarly Jerome, and the unidentified male saint, offer their reverence and devotion to the divine mother and child. The painting's rich colors and intricate details, captured in oil on wood, reveal the masterful skill of Francesco Zaganelli. The brocade drapery behind Mary and Jesus further emphasizes their regal status as the King and Queen of Heaven. This artwork, now housed in the Notre Dame du Folgoët museum in France, is a testament to the artistic heritage and spiritual depth of the Italian Renaissance.
