EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite carving from the Middle Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) depicts the meeting of two revered Bodhisattvas, Manjusri (Wenshu) and Samantabhadra (Puxian), in a beautiful display of Buddhist devotion and spiritual connection. The artwork, originating from China during the Tang Dynasty, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Asia and the deep-rooted influence of Buddhism on the continent. Manjusri, also known as Monju Bosatsu or Manjughosha, is depicted on the left side of the image, holding a sword in his right hand and a lotus in his left. He is regarded as the embodiment of wisdom and the patron saint of education and knowledge. Samantabhadra, or Puxian, is shown on the right, with a blue-colored body and holding a white lotus in his hands. He is known as the Bodhisattva of perfected action and is believed to help guide individuals on their spiritual journey towards enlightenment. The intricately hand-carved limestone sculpture showcases the exceptional craftsmanship and artistic skills of the Tang Dynasty artisans. The Bodhisattvas are depicted in a serene and contemplative pose, their faces expressing deep concentration and inner peace. The use of color, with Manjusri's red robes and Samantabhadra's blue body, adds to the visual appeal and symbolic meaning of the artwork. This precious artifact is now housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors from around the world. The Meeting of the Bodhisattvas Manjusri and Samantabhadra is a significant addition to LACMA's extensive collection of Asian art and serves as a reminder of the enduring influence of Buddhism on Asian culture and beyond.
