Monumental brass to the late Mr. Robert Stephenson in Westminster Abbey, 1862. Creator: Unknown
Monumental brass to the late Mr. Robert Stephenson in Westminster Abbey, [London], 1862. A monumental brass to the memory of Robert Stephenson, by Hardman, of Birmingham, from a design by Gilbert Scott, has recently been laid down in the nave of Westminster Abbey, about midway between the western door and the choir screen. It is fixed in a polished granite slab about 8ft. in length, the figure, border, and ornamental corners being of brass. On the inner part of the slab are fleurs de lis cut into the stone; and on the border round the brass is the following inscription: "Sacred to the memory of Robert Stephenson, M.P. D.C.L. F.R.S. &c. late President of the Institution of Civil Engineers, who died 12th Oct. A.D. 1859, aged 59 years". Stephenson (1803-1859) was the only son of George Stephenson, the famed railway and locomotive engineer; many of the achievements popularly credited to his father were actually joint efforts of father and son. EDITORS COMMENTS
This monumental brass commemorates the life and achievements of Robert Stephenson (1803-1859), a renowned engineer and the only son of the legendary George Stephenson. The brass, created by Hardman of Birmingham from a design by Sir Gilbert Scott, was recently installed in the nave of Westminster Abbey, London. Measuring approximately 8ft in length, the brass figure is set into a polished granite slab. The inner part of the slab features fleurs-de-lis cut into the stone, while the border of the brass bears the following inscription: "Sacred to the memory of Robert Stephenson, M.P., D.C.L., F.R.S., &c., late President of the Institution of Civil Engineers, who died 12th Oct. A.D. 1859, aged 59 years." Robert Stephenson's contributions to engineering were significant, with many of his father's popular achievements being the result of their collaborative efforts. He held numerous esteemed titles, including Member of Parliament, Doctor of Civil Law, and Fellow of the Royal Society. The installation of this monumental brass in Westminster Abbey serves as a testament to his enduring legacy in the field of engineering.
