EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 18th century watercolor and gold on paper, titled "Moonlight Serenade (image 1 of 2)," dates between 1750 and 1775 and is of unknown origin. The painting depicts a young woman, possibly a princess, reclining on a moonlit terrace in South East Asia, likely in the Bengal region of India or Murshidabad in West Bengal. She is surrounded by a group of attendants, including a courtier playing music on a stringed instrument, and a masseuse giving her a foot massage. The scene is set under an opaque awning, shielding the group from the elements, as they enjoy the tranquility of the night. The young woman wears richly colored clothing and adornments, reflecting her royal status. The painting is reminiscent of the concept of the Abhisarika Nayika, or the heroine who is serenaded in the moonlight, a common theme in Indian art. The painting also showcases the scientific knowledge of the solar system, as the moon is depicted accurately in its lunar phases. This beautiful artwork is now part of the collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Asia and the Indian subcontinent.
