Murad V. the New Sultan of Turkey, 1876. Creator: Unknown
Murad V. the New Sultan of Turkey, 1876....Portrait of the new Sultan, Mourad V. [engraved] from the excellent photograph of him, by Messrs. W. and R. Downey, which was taken in July, 1867, when he came to England with his uncle, the late Sultan Abdul Aziz. Messrs. W. and R. Downey, of Eldon-square, Newcastle-on-Tyne, and of Ebury-street, Pimlico, in London, have long enjoyed a special reputation, gained in their art by the most frequent and successful portraiture of her Majesty [Queen Victoria] and the chief members of the Royal family. They have also produced satisfactory likenesses of many of the Royal and Imperial personages who have visited this country from foreign States. This portrait of Sultan Mourad is equally good, though it represents him as he appeared nine years ago'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

The portrait, an engraving derived from an excellent photograph taken by the renowned British photographers W. and R. Downey in July 1867, captures the Sultan as he appeared nine years prior. The Downey brothers, based in Eldon-square, Newcastle-on-Tyne, and Ebury-street, Pimlico, London, were celebrated for their exceptional art in portraiture. Their impressive clientele included Her Majesty Queen Victoria and other distinguished royal and imperial figures. This portrait of Sultan Murad V is a testament to their skill, showcasing the Sultan in military uniform, adorned with gold braid and epaulettes. He wears a traditional Ottoman headdress, a fez, and a tarboosh, completing the regal attire. The Sultan's facial hair, consisting of a moustache and goatee, adds to the intrigue of this image. This print was published in the prestigious Illustrated London News, providing a glimpse into the fashion, culture, and royalty of the Ottoman Empire during the nineteenth century.
