The Newcastle Boat Race, 1845. Creator: Unknown
The Newcastle Boat Race, 1845. Rowing race on the River Tyne in Newcastle between between Henry Clasper, of Derwenthaugh, near Newcastle, and William Pocock, of London. View showing...the start from above bridge, looking towards Gateshead. Clasper...won easily by more than a quarter of a mile...for the first 200 yards, the struggle was beautiful; the tiny skiffs battling with the waves, and the spray dashing over them...Pococks boat had...shipped a good deal of water. On getting loose, Clasper took the lead, and went away several lengths a-head, gradually improving his position; owing, no doubt, to Pococks boat having become heavy and unmanageable from the quantity of water it contained. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

The Newcastle Boat Race, 1845 - A Glimpse into a Thrilling Rowing Battle
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the intensity of the historic Newcastle Boat Race in 1845. The creator remains unknown, but their skillful depiction transports us back to that momentous day on the River Tyne. The image showcases the start of the race from an elevated perspective above a bridge, with Gateshead visible in the distance. Two formidable rowers, Henry Clasper of Derwenthaugh and William Pocock of London, prepare to engage in a fierce competition. As they set off, their tiny skiffs valiantly battle against powerful waves while being showered by sprays of water. In this enthralling contest, Clasper emerges as the victor by more than a quarter-mile distance. Although Pocock initially put up an admirable fight during the first 200 yards, his boat succumbed to its weight due to accumulating water. Once free from this burden, Clasper seizes control and steadily extends his lead. This engraving originally appeared in "Illustrated London News" in 1845 and provides valuable insight into sporting events of nineteenth-century Britain. It showcases not only the physical prowess and determination displayed by these athletes but also highlights how transportation via rivers played a significant role during that era. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of history captured through time's lens, we are reminded once again of how sport can ignite passion within individuals and communities alike.
