Philip Howard, Earl of Arundel, (mid 19th century). Creator: Henry Thomas Ryall
Philip Howard, Earl of Arundel, (mid 19th century). Portrait of English nobleman Saint Philip Howard, 20th Earl of Arundel (1557-1595) who became a Catholic during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. He spent ten years in the Tower of London, although charges of high treason were never proved. He asked the Queen, as he lay dying of dysentery, to allow him to see his wife, and his baby son who had never seen. The Queen told him that if he would return to Protestantism his request would be granted. Howard refused. He was acclaimed as a Catholic Martyr and was canonised by Pope Paul VI in 1970. From the original of Zucchero, in the collection of His Grace The Duke of Norfolk. [The London Printing and Publishing Company, London]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the portrait of Philip Howard, Earl of Arundel, a prominent English nobleman from the 16th century. Painted by Henry Thomas Ryall in the mid-19th century, this image showcases a man who defied societal norms and religious pressures during his time. Philip Howard's story is one of courage and conviction. Living under Queen Elizabeth I's reign, he made the bold decision to convert to Catholicism despite its prohibition. As a result, he endured ten long years imprisoned in the Tower of London on charges that were never proven. Even as he lay dying from dysentery, Philip Howard remained steadfast in his faith. He pleaded with Queen Elizabeth I for one final request - to see his wife and their baby son whom he had never met before. The queen offered him freedom if only he would renounce Catholicism, but Philip Howard refused without hesitation. His unwavering commitment to his beliefs earned him recognition as a Catholic martyr. In 1970, Pope Paul VI canonized him for his sacrifice and devotion. The original painting by Zucchero is now part of His Grace The Duke of Norfolk's collection. This print serves as a powerful reminder of Philip Howard's enduring legacy as an influential figure in English history who stood up for what he believed in against all odds.
