EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 9 for Oliver Goldsmith's 'The Vicar of Wakefield' (1776) by Daniel Berger: A poignant depiction of the Vicar's family in their humble indoor quarters. In this etching laid down on paper, the Vicar (seated, with a letter in hand) and his wife (standing behind him, holding a child) are shown in their modest home, surrounded by their five children. The scene exudes a sense of warmth and love, yet the viewer cannot help but notice the air of melancholy that pervades the room. The children, dressed in simple clothing, play and study, while the Vicar attends to his medical practice. The doctor's bag and medical books are scattered around the room, hinting at his dual role as a clergyman and a physician. The interior, with its rustic charm, is a reflection of the simple pleasures and hardships of rural life in Britain during the 18th century. This evocative illustration, created by the German artist Daniel Berger (1738-1794), is a visual complement to Goldsmith's classic novel, which explores themes of love, loss, and the human condition.
