The Pool of Bethesda, 1772
Christ healing a man at the pool of Bethesda, who has not been able to walk for 38 years. On the left a group of ill people wait for their turn in the miraculous waters. The pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem was known for its supposed healing properties. An angel was supposedly meant to disturb the waters and whoever entered the pool after this would be cured from their affliction; and in the scene an angel hovers over the pool. The engraving is after a painting Hogarth painted at St Bartholomews Hospital, and it is believed that he modelled the subjects of the painting on actual patients. The event is taken from St Johns Gospel

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the powerful biblical scene of Christ healing a man at the Pool of Bethesda in 1772. The image depicts a man who has been unable to walk for 38 years, eagerly receiving the miraculous waters that were believed to cure afflictions. On the left side, a group of ill people patiently waits their turn, hoping for their own healing. The engraving is based on an original painting by William Hogarth, created at St Bartholomew's Hospital. It is said that Hogarth used actual patients as models for this poignant portrayal of faith and hope. In the scene, an angel hovers above the pool, symbolizing divine intervention and emphasizing the religious significance of this event taken from St John's Gospel. The Pool of Bethesda was renowned in Jerusalem for its supposed healing properties. According to legend, an angel would disturb the waters periodically, granting miraculous cures to those who entered first after this disturbance. This image showcases both human vulnerability and unwavering belief in divine intervention. With its monochrome aesthetic and detailed depiction of various characters - men, women, children - all seeking relief from sickness or disability through faith in Jesus Christ's power to heal; this print serves as a testament to both artistry and spirituality intertwined with medical science during the 18th century.
