The Prince of Wales in the Terai: the camp fire after dinner...1876. Creator: Unknown
The Prince of Wales in the Terai: the camp fire after dinner, from a sketch by one of our special artists, 1876. The future King Edward VII in India. Every night in camp a large fire of wood is lighted close to the mess-tent, and after dinner his Royal Highness and suite, with the guests of the evening, come out, well wrapped up in greatcoats, and sit all round the blazing fire and smoke cigars. Here in the jungle this can be done, for there is no crowd to break through and disturb such a free and open arrangement. It tells how far from the haunts of men the Terai is when a Prince and his suite can sit out in this comfortable way and enjoy themselves, unmolested by curious spectators'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts a moment of relaxation for the future King Edward VII, also known as the Prince of Wales, during his visit to the Terai region of Nepal in 1876. The scene captures the Prince and his suite gathered around a campfire after dinner, enjoying cigars and basking in the warmth of the blazing flames. The campfire was a nightly tradition in the Terai, where a large wood fire was lit near the mess-tent. The Prince and his companions, bundled up in greatcoats, could sit comfortably around the fire without interruption from onlookers, a testament to the seclusion and wilderness of the region. The engraved illustration, published in the Illustrated London News in 1876, captures the outdoor, al fresco atmosphere of the Prince's camping experience in the Terai. The Prince, dressed in fashionable clothing of the nineteenth century, sits in an armchair, surrounded by other men, all engrossed in their cigars and conversation. The campfire, with its flickering light, casts an intriguing darkness around the scene, adding to the mysterious allure of the Terai and the Prince's royal visit.
