The Prince of Wales in the Terai: Meeting with Sir Jung Bahadoor...1876. Creator: Unknown
The Prince of Wales in the Terai: Meeting with Sir Jung Bahadoor, from a sketch by one of our special artists, 1876. The future King Edward VII in India. Sir Jung Bahadoor came over to the Prince's camp fire on foot from his tent, near at hand, to announce that five tigers had been reported in the jungle for to-day's beat, and that they were all marked down and watched, elephants having been dispatched to hem in their haunts. These were all near the camp - that is, within a five-mile radius. This part of the Nepaul Terai is, indeed, the nursery of tigers'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a historic moment in the Terai region of Nepal during the late 19th century, as The Prince of Wales, future King Edward VII, meets with Sir Jung Bahadoor. The Prince, dressed in full hunting attire, sits by the campfire, while Sir Jung Bahadoor, a prominent Nepalese diplomat and military leader, approaches on foot to report the sighting of five tigers in the nearby jungle. The animals, all marked and watched, were within a five-mile radius of the camp. The Terai region was renowned for being the nursery of tigers during that era, making this news particularly noteworthy. The Prince and Sir Jung Bahadoor exchange a handshake, showcasing the diplomatic relations between Britain and Nepal during the British Raj. The scene is depicted in this engraving from the Illustrated London News, providing a glimpse into the fashion of the time, with the Prince wearing a braided uniform and the horsemen in traditional Nepalese attire. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of imperialism, diplomacy, and the natural world during the British colonial era.
