The Prince of Wales's Elephant charged by a Tiger, 1876. Creator: C.R
The Prince of Wales's Elephant charged by a Tiger, 1876. The future King Edward VII shoots tigers during a royal visit to India. The tigers, finding themselves hemmed in, rushed furiously round the circle, roaring loudly. The elephants were trumpeting, men shouting, and it was a scene of great confusion...the elephant ridden by his Royal Highness was attacked. Though a staunch animal, this elephant did not keep his front towards the tiger, but turned so as to receive the tiger upon his vast haunch. This movement sent the mahout and the other persons upon the elephant reeling backwards; but the Prince instantly recovered himself, coolly turned round, and fired. The tiger was killed, his head being at that time very near the legs of Mr. Peter Robertson, the Prince's attendant, then seated behind him. Four tigers were killed at this one spot...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled 'The Prince of Wales's Elephant Charged by a Tiger,' dates back to 1876 and depicts a thrilling moment during a royal visit to India by the future King Edward VII. The Prince, dressed in elegant Victorian apparel, sits atop an elephant in a howdah, surrounded by mahouts and other attendants. The scene is set in the jungles of India, where tigers roamed freely. Suddenly, the tranquility was shattered as a tiger, enraged and cornered, charged towards the elephant. The elephant, though a sturdy beast, did not face the tiger directly but turned to protect its haunch. The sudden movement sent the mahout and other attendants reeling backwards. The Prince, showing remarkable courage and quick thinking, turned around and fired his gun, killing the tiger. Four tigers were reportedly killed at this very spot. The illustration, published in the 'Illustrated London News,' describes the scene as one of great confusion, with elephants trumpeting, men shouting, and tigers roaring. The image, engraved in black and white, captures the drama and intensity of the moment. The Prince's bravery during the hunt was a subject of controversy in the British press, with some criticizing the practice of hunting endangered species for sport during the British Raj. Despite the controversy, the image remains a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the imperialist attitude towards the natural world and the role of the British monarchy during the 19th century.
