EDITORS COMMENTS
Cornelis Anthonisz's 'The Prodigal Son Eats from the Pig's Trough' (c.1540-c.1550) is a powerful and evocative woodcut print that brings to life the biblical story of the Prodigal Son as told in the Gospel of Luke. The central figure in the image is the prodigal son himself, who, having squandered his inheritance, is now seen eating from a pig's trough, surrounded by the consequences of his actions. The allegorical figures of Despair, Disease, Hunger, War, and the Mouth of Hell encircle him, each representing the suffering and hardship that comes with a life of reckless abandon. In the background, the Synagogue of Satan stands ominously, symbolizing the false teachings and temptations that led the son astray. Above, God's punishment is depicted in the form of two hands emerging from a cloud, one holding an orb and the other a whip. This represents the divine intervention that ultimately saves the son from his destructive path. The print is a masterful example of the allegorical tradition in Dutch art of the 16th century, with each figure and symbol carefully crafted to convey a deeper meaning. The woodcut is hand-coloured, with the costumes adjusted to modernize the image while preserving its historic integrity. This print is a must-see for anyone interested in the artistic and cultural heritage of this period, offering a fascinating glimpse into the artistic school of Cornelis Anthonisz and the allegorical tradition in Dutch art.
