Raleighs House, 1844. Creator: Unknown

Raleighs House, 1844. Sir Walter Raleighs house at Youghal in Ireland. It presents the ordinary appearance of the comfortable manor-house of the Elizabethan era, though it was originally a collegiate establishment, consisting of a warden, fellows, and singing men, founded in the year 1464...In the year 1603, Sir Walter Raleigh came into possession of it, and afterwards sold his interest to Sir Richard Boyle, afterwards Earl of Cork. It is now the residence of Colonel Faunt, who has given it the name of Myrtle Grove, and with judgment and good taste has made any alterations or repairs subservient to, or in keeping with, the character of the building. The walls are nearly five feet in thickness; the exterior is wainscoted all through with Irish oak, in good preservation. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Raleigh's House, a remarkable manor-house in Youghal, Ireland. Dating back to the Elizabethan era, this house was originally a collegiate establishment founded in 1464. However, its ownership changed hands over time and eventually came into possession of Sir Walter Raleigh in 1603. He later sold it to Sir Richard Boyle, who would become the Earl of Cork. Renamed Myrtle Grove by its current resident Colonel Faunt, this historic building has been carefully maintained and restored with great taste and respect for its original character. The walls are impressively thick at nearly five feet, while the exterior is adorned with Irish oak wainscoting that remains remarkably well-preserved. The photograph itself captures the essence of this extraordinary architectural gem from the 19th century. Taken from an engraving featured in "Illustrated London News" in 1844, it transports us back to a bygone era when grand manor-houses like Raleigh's House dotted the landscape of Britain. As we gaze upon this image today, we can't help but marvel at the timeless beauty and elegance exuded by this historical treasure. It serves as a testament to both the craftsmanship of those who built it centuries ago and those who have lovingly preserved it through generations. This photograph allows us to appreciate not only its physical splendor but also its rich history as an integral part of Ireland's cultural heritage.
