The release of politicial prisoners from the Castellamare, Palermo, on June 19... 1860. Creator: Unknown
The release of politicial prisoners from the Castellamare, Palermo, on June 19 - from a sketch by our special artist, Frank Vizetelly, 1860. View of...the triumphal progress of Baron Riso and other political prisoners along the Via Macqueda after their release, on the 19th of June, from the Fort of Castellamare, where they had been kept in confinement since the 5th of April. The ovation they received was wonderful; and what assisted greatly to heighten the effect of the scene was the fact of the young Baroness being in the carriage with her husband, whom she held in an affectionate embrace. A priest in the procession was so overcome with joy that he did nothing but dance by the side of the carriage in which the released prisoners were seated, and shout, with the full force of his lungs, which were uncommonly strong, "Evviva l'ltalia!" "Evviva Garibaldi, " &c'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image captures the jubilant moment of the triumphant procession of political prisoners, led by Baron Riso, as they were released from the Fort of Castellamare in Palermo on June 19, 1860. The sketch, created by Frank Vizetelly for the Illustrated London News, depicts the scene along the Via Macqueda, where the released prisoners were greeted with an overwhelming ovation from the people of Palermo. The sight of Baron Riso and his fellow prisoners being escorted through the streets was a testament to the growing momentum of the Italian Unification movement. The presence of Baron Riso's young wife in the carriage with him added an emotional depth to the scene, as she held him in an affectionate embrace. The procession was filled with a sense of joy and celebration, as evidenced by the priest who could not contain his excitement and was seen dancing and shouting "Evviva l'Italia!" and "Evviva Garibaldi!" with all his might. The priest's strong lungs and unbridled enthusiasm only added to the infectious spirit of the crowd. This image serves as a powerful reminder of the hope and determination that fueled the Italian Unification movement, as political prisoners were released and the people of Palermo came together to celebrate their shared desire for freedom and self-governance.
