The Revolution in Naples - charge of Neapolitan cavalry on the national troops before Capua... 1860 Creator: Unknown
The Revolution in Naples - charge of Neapolitan cavalry on the national troops before Capua, on the 19th of September - from a sketch by our special artist in Italy, Frank Vizetelly, 1860. Neapolitan lancers; Col. Peard; Major Wortley; Col. Baker...General Turr sent a strong column against Capua, as if to make an assault on the town, and that column was immediately attacked by 10, 000 Royalists. During that time other corps of Garibaldians quietly crossed the river, and established themselves on the heights of Cajazzo... A sharp attack was to be made from the main road, which was to be aided by another along the direct road from Naples, which approaches Capua from due south. This auxiliary attack was confided to General Spangaro. General Rostoff commanded the troops at Santa Maria. The whole movement was merely a feint to engage the attention of the guns and garrison generally, while Garibaldi and Turr crossed the Voltumo, and got round to the north-easterly side of Capua, to reconnoitre and obtain possession of Cajazzo, where the high ground entirely commands the city'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, titled 'The Revolution in Naples - charge of Neapolitan cavalry on the national troops before Capua,' dates back to 1860. The image, created from a sketch by Frank Vizetelly, depicts an intense moment during the Neapolitan Revolution as Neapolitan cavalry charge towards national troops before the city of Capua. The scene is set against the backdrop of a tumultuous historical context, with the Neapolitan army attempting to repel the advancing national forces led by Giuseppe Garibaldi and General Turr. The photograph is a vivid representation of the chaos and intensity of the battlefield. Neapolitan lancers, led by Colonels Peard and Baker, and Major Wortley, are seen charging towards their opponents, their horses rearing and snorting in determination. The national troops, however, are prepared for the attack, their ranks tight and their weapons at the ready. The battle for Capua was a crucial moment in the Neapolitan Revolution, with Garibaldi and Turr attempting to outmaneuver the Neapolitan forces by making a feint attack on the city while crossing the Voltumo river and getting around to the north-eastern side of Capua. The main attack was led by General Rostoff, while General Spangaro was in charge of an auxiliary attack from the south. The ultimate goal was to gain possession of the high ground at Cajazzo, which commanded a view of the entire city. The photograph is a testament to the bravery and determination of the soldiers involved in the battle, as well as the strategic brilliance of the revolutionary leaders. It is a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in Italian history, and a fascinating glimpse into the past.
