Robert Boyles second air pump, c1660 (1725)
Robert Boyles second air pump, c1660 (1725). The pump is being used to evacuate a bell jar to examine the effect on an animal inside it. Robert Boyle (1627-1691) was a physicist and chemist who carried out many experiments on air, vacuum, combustion, and respiration. In 1662 he formulated Boyles Law, which states that the pressure and volume of gas are inversely proportional. From an edition of Boyles work published in 1725

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Robert Boyle's second air pump, a groundbreaking scientific instrument from the 17th century. In this particular experiment, Boyle employs the pump to create a vacuum inside a bell jar, allowing him to observe the effects on an animal placed within it. The image provides us with a glimpse into the world of early scientific exploration and discovery. Robert Boyle, renowned physicist and chemist of his time, dedicated his life to conducting various experiments related to air, vacuum, combustion, and respiration. His significant contribution came in 1662 when he formulated Boyle's Law—an essential principle stating that gas pressure and volume are inversely proportional. The print itself is an engraving dating back to 1725—a testament to its historical significance. It transports us back in time as we witness one of Boyle's pioneering investigations unfold before our eyes. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth and intrigue to the scene while highlighting the intricate details of both the air pump and bell jar. This visual representation captures not only the essence of scientific curiosity but also serves as a reminder of how far we have come in understanding these fundamental principles today. As we reflect upon this remarkable piece from Ireland-born Robert Boyle's legacy, it reminds us that science knows no bounds—bridging gaps between nations and centuries alike.
