EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite folio from a Ragamala, or Garland of Melodies, showcases the figure of Shri Raga, the presiding deity of music, from the 1620s. The image, created in opaque watercolor with gold and red and black ink on paper, hails from the 17th century, likely from the Indian subcontinent, possibly Rajasthan or Southeast Asia. The scene unfolds on a veranda, where four figures are engaged in an evening soiree, entertained by a group of musicians. At the center, Shri Raga sits majestically on a throne, holding a fly whisk or fan in one hand and a fly swatter or manjira in the other. His attire is adorned with gold ornaments, and he wears a serene expression, embodying the essence of music and melody. To his left, an attendant plays hand cymbals, while a musician strums a stringed instrument. On the right, the figures of Narada, a celestial sage, and Tumburu, a king and a legendary musician, are depicted in deep concentration, listening intently to the music. This scene represents the rich cultural heritage of India and the significance of music in Hinduism. The Ragamala series, which includes numerous such folios, was a popular form of art in the Indian subcontinent, often used to illustrate the various ragas, or melodies, and their associated moods and seasons. This particular folio, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, is a testament to the artistic prowess of the unknown artist and the enduring appeal of music and storytelling in the Indian tradition.
