The Siege of Sebastopol - Gordon's Attack with a Lancaster Gun, 1854. Creator: Unknown
The Siege of Sebastopol - Gordon's Attack with a Lancaster Gun, 1854. Crimean War: British soldiers with heavy artillery:..on the crest of a precipice, is a one-gun battery, mounted with one of Lancaster's guns, which was destined to batter a three-decker in the Admiralty harbour. This object has been defeated since the erection of the battery, by the withdrawal of the vessel; but a second embrasure has been made, and the Lancaster gun will now be directed towards the fated round tower against whioh so many snarling muzzles are already turned with dreadful purpose...On the 20th the guns in Gordon's right battery were withdrawn, as it was considered that they were working at too great a distance from the round tower against which they were directed. The Lancaster gun was left to fire at the shipping, which it merely annoyed, without doing serious damage'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, titled "The Siege of Sebastopol - Gordon's Attack with a Lancaster Gun, 1854," showcases a pivotal moment during the Crimean War. The image depicts British soldiers, with determined expressions, manning a one-gun battery on the edge of a precipice. The gun in question is a Lancaster gun, which was initially aimed at a three-decker ship in the Admiralty harbor. Although the vessel had withdrawn before the battery was completed, a second embrasure was made, and the Lancaster gun was repositioned towards the infamous round tower. The round tower, a formidable fortification, had already been under relentless attack from numerous muzzles, including those of the British artillery. On the 20th of an unspecified month, the guns in Gordon's right battery were withdrawn due to their ineffectiveness in reaching the round tower. The Lancaster gun, however, continued to fire at the shipping in the harbor, causing mere annoyance rather than significant damage. This photograph offers a glimpse into the intense and strategic nature of the Crimean War, with the soldiers' unwavering commitment to their mission evident in their focused expressions. The image is an intriguing reminder of the historical significance of the Siege of Sebastopol and the role that the Lancaster gun played in the conflict.
