Sketches from H.M.S. Challenger, by Mr. J. J. Wild: Christmas Harbour, Kerguelen Island, 1876. Creator: Unknown
Sketches from H.M.S. Challenger, by Mr. J. J. Wild: Christmas Harbour, Kerguelen Island, 1876. The gigantic natural arch at its entrance, torn by the sea from the neighbouring cliff; the stately basaltic terraces, covered with a carpet of bright green moss, by which it is surrounded; the lofty crag of Cape Francais, on the north side, and the enormous boulder to the south, which seems as though it would fall at any moment and choke up the harbour -compose one of the most striking landscapes of the southern hemisphere'. Challenger, a steam-assisted warship of the Royal Navy, was used for the Challenger Expedition of 1872-1876, a British scientific mission which took naturalists and oceanographers on a grand tour of the world, covering 68, 000 nautical miles (125, 936 km). John James Wild was official artist on the expedition. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts Sketches from H.M.S. Challenger, specifically Christmas Harbour on Kerguelen Island, as rendered by Mr. J. J. Wild in 1876. The image showcases the breathtaking natural beauty of this remote southern hemisphere location. The harbor's entrance is dominated by a colossal natural arch, carved from the neighboring cliff, which frames the tranquil waters below. The basaltic terraces, adorned with a vibrant green moss, encircle the harbor, adding an otherworldly allure to the scene. To the north stands the towering crag of Cape Francais, while a massive boulder to the south precariously balances, threatening to block the harbor at any moment. The Challenger, a steam-assisted warship of the Royal Navy, served as the vessel for the Challenger Expedition of 1872-1876. This groundbreaking scientific mission, led by British naturalists and oceanographers, embarked on a grand tour of the world, traversing an impressive 68,000 nautical miles (125,936 km). John James Wild, an official artist on the expedition, skillfully captured the essence of this extraordinary landscape, immortalizing its majesty for future generations.
