Sketches in Ireland - Kilkenny, 1845. Creator: Unknown
Sketches in Ireland - Kilkenny, 1845. The first object that strikes the visitor on entering Kilkenny is its famous Castle, the ancient and present seat of " the Ormonds, " standing on a small hill that overlooks the river Nore...From the turrets of the Castle, there is a striking view of Kilkenny, and a magnificent prospect of the winding Nore and the fertile valley through which it flows...The Kilkenny coal gives no smoke; there are few bogs in the vicinity; the streets are literally paved with black marble; and fogs are very rare.... From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Sketches in Ireland - Kilkenny, 1845" takes us back to the enchanting landscapes of 19th century Kilkenny. The creator of this mesmerizing image remains unknown, yet their talent for capturing the essence of this historical city is undeniable. The focal point of the photograph is undoubtedly Kilkenny Castle, a majestic fortress that proudly stands atop a small hill overlooking the meandering river Nore. Its ancient walls tell tales of centuries past, as it served as the seat of power for the influential Ormond family. From its turrets, one can witness an awe-inspiring view encompassing not only the charming town itself but also a breathtaking panorama of the fertile valley through which the Nore gracefully flows. The absence of smoke from burning coal and scarcity of bogs in close proximity contribute to a remarkably clear atmosphere in Kilkenny. As we gaze upon this print, we are reminded that even in Victorian times when fogs were common elsewhere, they were rare here. Originally featured in "Illustrated London News" during 1845, this engraving transports us back to an era where newspapers brought distant lands closer to our fingertips. It serves as a testament to both British curiosity about Ireland's beauty and our timeless fascination with history and geography. This remarkable piece by an anonymous artist allows us to appreciate not only their skill but also offers a glimpse into Kilkenny's rich heritage that continues to captivate visitors today.
