Sketches in Ireland - Newport-Mayo, 1845. Creator: Unknown
Sketches in Ireland - Newport-Mayo, 1845. Newport-Mayo, in the county Mayo, is situated on a little river that empties itself into Clew Bay, on the western coast of Ireland. It is the property of Sir Richard O Donell, the nominal owner of eighty thousand statute acres of land, but, unfortunately, like many such estates of large sound, but of little value, owing to long leases, mountain waste, and bog land...A cheerful, lively, improved, and improving place, well adapted for shipping trade, and agreeably situated in itself. It is well sheltered by hills and trees, and is close upon the bay, although hidden from the sea by the turn of the stream and the high rocks. Nothing can be more beautiful than Clew Bay, with its myriad of islands and its grand coast scenery; the mountain Croagh Patrick, and the Island of Clare, being among its more important features. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Sketches in Ireland - Newport-Mayo, 1845" takes us back to the enchanting landscapes of County Mayo in the 19th century. Created by an unknown artist, this sketch showcases the picturesque town of Newport-Mayo nestled along a tranquil river that flows into Clew Bay on Ireland's western coast. Owned by Sir Richard O Donell, this estate spans over eighty thousand acres of land, although its true value is diminished due to long leases and vast stretches of mountainous terrain and bogland. Nevertheless, Newport-Mayo remains a cheerful and lively place with continuous improvements taking place. Its strategic location makes it well-suited for shipping trade while being surrounded by hills and trees that provide ample shelter from the elements. The highlight of this region is undoubtedly Clew Bay itself, boasting breathtaking beauty with its countless islands dotting the azure waters against a backdrop of majestic coastal scenery. Notable features include Croagh Patrick Mountain towering above all else and Clare Island adding to the bay's allure. Originally published in "Illustrated London News" in 1845, this engraving captures the essence of Irish landscape during Victorian times. Preserved through time by The Print Collector, this historic piece allows us to appreciate both the natural splendor and human influence on these lands centuries ago.
