EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking mezzotint print, created by artist James Watson in the late 18th century, depicts Sir George Brydges Rodney, Rear Admiral of the Blue, during his distinguished naval career. Rodney, who was also known as Baron Rodney of Rodney Stoke, was a prominent figure in British naval warfare during the American Revolutionary War. He is shown here wearing the formal uniform of a rear admiral, complete with a tricorn hat adorned with a feather and a red waistcoat, as was customary for naval officers of the time. The print is believed to have been influenced by the renowned portraitist Sir Joshua Reynolds, as evidenced by the meticulous attention to detail and the lifelike quality of the subject's features. The background is kept simple, with a plain, dark backdrop that draws the viewer's focus to Rodney's strong and determined expression. This print offers a glimpse into the fashion and culture of the 18th century, as well as the rich naval heritage of Ireland, where Rodney was born, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, where this print is now housed, is proud to exhibit it as part of its extensive collection.
