EDITORS COMMENTS
In this delightful turn-of-the-century image by American artist William H. Bradley, titled "St. Nicholas for young folks," three children stand before a Christmas tree, gazing up at the jolly figure of St. Nicholas, or Father Christmas, as he hangs from the wall above. The children, a boy and two girls, are dressed in their Sunday best, with the boy wearing a checkered shirt and the girls in tartan dresses and white collars. The boy reaches up to hold St. Nicholas' hand, while the girls clasp each other's hands, their eyes wide with wonder and excitement. The image, which dates from around 1894-1896, is a lithograph or lithotint, a common printing technique of the time. The use of the Western script and English text adds to the piece's antique charm, as does the ornate, Art Nouveau-inspired lettering that frames the scene. The image was likely published in a magazine or as a poster, and is now part of the Wallach Division Picture Collection at the New York Public Library. Mary Mapes Dodge, an American author and editor, is credited with writing the accompanying text, which reads, "St. Nicholas, the good old gentleman, who brings toys to children at Christmas time, is represented here in his best attire, ready to distribute gifts to the little ones." The image and text together serve as a reminder of the magical and joyful spirit of the holiday season, and the importance of family and community during this special time of year.
