Tiverton, Devonshire, for which Lord Palmerston sat in the House of Commons, 1865. Creator: R. C. Hulme
Tiverton, Devonshire, for which Lord Palmerston sat in the House of Commons, 1865. 'The borough town of Tiverton...is pleasantly situated on the river Exe, about fourteen miles from the city of Exeter. It stands on a rising ground at the confluence of the Exe with a smaller stream called the Loman...The View we have engraved was taken...from the ground at the end of St. Andrew's-street. It shows the new Townhall, not far from the bridge; St. Peter's Church, rising behind. On the left hand is the river Exe, below the bridge, two arches only of which appear; on the farther side of the river is Westexe, with the lace-factory. On the right hand is the railway station - Tiverton being accommodated with a short branch of the Bristol and Exeter line...Lord Palmerston had no property or family connection in the neighbourhood of Tiverton, but all classes of the inhabitants were proud of him as their representative'. From "Illustrated London News", 1865

**Tiverton's Pride: A Victorian Era Snapshot**
In this charming print, photographer R.C. Hulme captures the essence of Tiverton, a picturesque borough town in Devonshire, England (1865). Nestled on the banks of the River Exe, with its confluence with the Loman stream creating a scenic backdrop, Tiverton boasts a rich history and heritage.
The photograph shows St. Andrew's Street from where it looks out upon the newly built Town Hall, situated near the bridge that spans the river. In the distance stands St. Peter's Church, rising majestically behind its stately façade. To the left of this tranquil scene lies Westexe with its lace factory, while on the right-hand side is Tiverton railway station - a testament to progress and connectivity.
This photograph holds special significance as it was taken during Lord Palmerston's tenure in Parliament (1865). Despite having no personal connection or property ties to Tiverton, he remains deeply revered by the town's inhabitants. This print serves as a nostalgic reminder of Victorian era life, with its quaint architecture, bustling railway station and serene riverbank setting.
