The vote for annexation at Naples - polling booth at Monte Calvario - from a sketch by T. Nast, 1860 Creator: Unknown
The vote for annexation at Naples - polling booth at Monte Calvario - from a sketch by T. Nast, 1860. Italian elections on 21st October. Bands of people are coming down, men and women, Garibaldini and civilians, all mixed up in delightful confusion, with music and flags, clapping their hands and shouting Viva Garibaldi! Viva Vittorio Emmanuele!'...a brass band is playing that beautiful hymn to Garibaldi...Even the women want to vote, but they are kept back. There is an exception made in favour of Marianna la Santa Giovannara, an old patriot of the quarter, known throughout the city for her devotion to Liberal principles...Some so old that they could scarcely totter passed before me, and men on crutches, and blind men, who groped their way to the urn, and cried out lustily Si, Si! But there was one case so affecting that it moved me almost to unmanliness. It was a person in advanced life, with grey hair, who came up, threw in his Si, and then knelt down and kissed the urn with devotion, being choked at the time with the excess of feeling. What a history did that act tell of!...The result of the voting in the kingdom of Naples was officially declared...as follows: Yes, 1, 302, 062; No, 10, 312: majority in favour of annexation, 1, 291, 752'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled 'The vote for annexation at Naples - polling booth at Monte Calvario - from a sketch by T. Nast, 1860,' depicts an electrifying scene from the Italian elections held on October 21, 1860. The sketch, created by renowned American caricaturist Thomas Nast, captures the excitement and enthusiasm of the people as they flock to the polling booth at Monte Calvario to cast their votes in favor of annexation. Bands of people are seen making their way down the streets, a mix of Garibaldini and civilians, all united in their joy and anticipation. The air is filled with music, flags, and the sounds of people clapping their hands and shouting, "Viva Garibaldi!" and "Viva Vittorio Emmanuele!" A brass band plays a beautiful hymn to Garibaldi, adding to the festive atmosphere. Even the women, who were not allowed to vote, are seen longing to participate in the democratic process. An exception is made for Marianna la Santa Giovannara, an old patriot of the quarter, who is known throughout the city for her devotion to Liberal principles. The elderly and infirm are also making their way to the urn, some with the help of crutches or canes, and all with great determination. One particularly moving scene shows an elderly man, with grey hair, casting his vote and then kneeling down to kiss the urn with deep devotion. The result of the voting in the kingdom of Naples was officially declared a few days later, with a resounding majority in favor of annexation: Yes, 1,302,062; No, 10,312. The scene captured in this sketch is a testament to the passion and determination of the Italian people to fight for their freedom and self-determination.
