The War in Naples - Victor Emmanuel giving commands to commence the bombardment... 1860. Creator: W Thomas

The War in Naples - Victor Emmanuel giving commands to commence the bombardment of Capua - from a sketch by our special artist, 1860....the King himself planted the red flag which was to serve as the signal for the commencement of the bombardment...At four o'clock the battery of Casa Bianca set the first shell flying. A quarter of an hour afterwards the walls of Capua were surrounded by a circle of white smoke...[He] looked at Capua through his eyeglass now and then, and I heard him remarking, "It is a pity that we have to do damage to so handsome a town"...As the daylight gradually disappeared and the darkness came on, the aspect of the murderous fight became still more imposing and terrible. Nothing was to be seen but the flashes of the guns and the luminous curves traced by the shells on the black sky. Nothing was to be heard but the roaring of the iron mouths and the terrible noise of the falling houses of the town. A strong north wind, form time to time, brought to my ear the loud screams of the unhappy inhabitants'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
The War in Naples: Victor Emmanuel II Giving Commands to Commence the Bombardment of Capua, 1860" by W. Thomas is a striking photographic print capturing a pivotal moment in Italian history. The image depicts King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy, clad in military attire, giving orders to his soldiers to begin the bombardment of Capua. The scene takes place at the Casa Bianca battery, with the King himself planting the red flag as the signal for the commencement of the attack. The bombardment marked a significant turning point in the Italian Unification War, as Capua was a stronghold of the Neapolitan Kingdom, which was opposing the unification efforts led by Victor Emmanuel II. The photograph captures the tense atmosphere of the moment, with the King's focused expression and the soldiers poised and ready for action. As the first shell was fired, a quarter of an hour later, the walls of Capua were surrounded by a circle of white smoke. The King looked on through his eyeglass, expressing regret for the damage to the town's handsome buildings. The daylight gradually disappeared, and the aspect of the fight became more imposing and terrible. The flashes of the guns and the luminous curves traced by the shells on the black sky were the only things visible, while the roaring of the guns and the terrible noise of the falling houses filled the air. A strong north wind brought the loud screams of the unfortunate inhabitants to the ears of the soldiers and onlookers. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1860, provides a vivid and poignant depiction of the realities of war and the human cost of conflict. The image is a testament to the power and impact of photography in recording history and bringing distant events to the attention of the world.
